Getting to Know Emergent’s 2016 Summer Intern Maureen Courtney
Part three of Getting To Know Emergent's 2016 Summer Interns interview series is with Maureen Courtney. Maureen joins Emergent for her first summer working with our Contracts Team.
This is the last week with our interns; we thank them for all of their hard work and hope to see them back at Emergent next summer!
Welcome! We are excited to have you on the Emergent Team this summer! Where are you from?
I grew up in Fairfax, VA so right around the area.
What are some of your hobbies?
I do a lot of crafting and cooking and I love hiking. I’ve recently started a blog with one of my good friends from high school and that’s become a bit of a hobby as well I suppose.
When did you guys start blogging? What topics do you write about?
It started as somewhat of a joke and it's moderately self serving but apparently people find it funny because we have a decent number of views at this point. We played soccer together in middle school so we were kind of friends but then around Junior year of high school we really hit it off and now we’re really close. It’s honestly about anything and everything that we feel is somewhat interesting and/or funny. We only have 5 or 6 posts at this point but we’re just having fun with it! It's on WordPress.
What year are you in college? Where do you attend?
I just finished my first year at Gettysburg College, which is a teeny tiny school with less than 3,000 students in Gettysburg, PA (right in the middle of the battlefields).
What is your major? What made you want to work for our Contracts Team?
I’m an English major but hoping to add either a double or a minor in Political Science. I was interested in the Contracts Team just because I really like reading and writing and it definitely offers me experience with a type of language and style that I haven’t really been introduced to before.
Have you had any experience working with Contracts before? What has been the biggest challenge?
I haven’t had any experience working with Contracts or with any sort of contract in any way at all. I think the biggest challenge has really just been familiarizing myself with really technical language and trying to get into that kind of headspace.
Do you have any fun plans for the rest of the summer before you head back to school?
Well besides working I’m really just trying to spend my free time doing semi-interesting things for my blog that people might want to read about. I’m just really hoping to get some crafting and cooking and DIY project type stuff lined up for the rest of the summer. I’m also hoping to get down to the Outer Banks with my family for a little bit and potentially a trip to visit friends in New England
What have you enjoyed most about working as an Emergent Intern up to this point?
I have some friends that are interning elsewhere and I think what really has set my experience apart is that I’m doing actual interesting work that I feel is somewhat valuable instead of making copies and going on coffee runs so I really do feel that I am learning a lot.
